He also came up with a secret code which he shared with his wife Bess so that she could determine if the contact was legitimate. He did want to prove he had an open mind thought, and he made a pact with his friends that he would contact them after his death, if it was possible. This show included debunking mediums, and he offered $10,000 to anyone he could not debunk. Houdini started a new full-evening show in the fall of 1925. She was exposed as a fraud, and the magazine denied her the cash prize. Houdini wrote a 40-page pamphlet exposing her tricks and created a “fraud preventer” cabinet which had a slanted top and openings for the medium’s head and arms. She apparently flirted with the men, which helped to disarm them. During a trance, she supposedly channeled a spirit that whispered into the séance-sitters’ears, touched them, and even moved objects in the room. The committee was deadlocked over Mina “Margery” Crandon, the wife of a Harvard-trained doctor. Also in 1923, he joined a panel created by Scientific American magazine they offered a reward of $2,500 to any medium who could prove their powers. He traveled around the country in 1923 to give lectures against mediums and published A Magician Among Spirits the next year. He created slides of mediums which he projected to denounce them, as tried to expose what he called “vultures who prey on the bereaved.” He also attended seances in disguise, during which he would gather evidence, before tearing off the disguise and revealing how the deception was created. Houdini began to dedicate a lot of energy to debunking these mediums, investigating their methods and duplicating them on the stage to expose the fraud. As Houdini said, in the dark “it is not necessary for the medium to be even a clever conjurer.” He wanted to be instead considered a “mysterious entertainer” and, derided those with supposed psychic powers who practiced their tricks in the dark. Houdini was bothered by the way that Spiritualist mediums transgressed his craft, and he rejected claims that he had supernatural powers. Houdini recognized that the message was fraudulent, as he noted that she would not have drawn a cross at the top of each page since she was the daughter of a rabbi. During the séance, she wrote out a five-page message which she claimed was from Houdini’s mother. Then, when Houdini’s mother died, he attempted to contact her through Jean. In 1920, Houdini became friends with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose wife Jean claimed to be a medium skilled in automatic writing. Houdini Debunked Conan Doyle's Wife's Claims Some scientists believed in it, including the English physicist Sir Oliver Lodge, who held seances to tune into messages Edison and Alexander Graham Bell tried experimented to find tools for spirit communication. Spiritualism got its start in the 1840s in New York, where the Fox sisters fooled their mother into believing that the crack of their toe knuckles were disembodied messages the movement spread with even Mary Todd Lincoln holding seances in the White House.
